BÁLAT:BALÁT

2023- 2024

Bálat:Balát  delves into themes of identity, patriotism, and nationalism. The photograph juxtaposes an enamel pin in front of a brown skin and the Canadian flag, prompting viewers to contemplate their perceptions of what it means to be “Canadian.” Through this image, the artist explores and embraces their Canadian identity while also navigating the complexities of being Filipino. Despite being perceived as Canadian by many, the artist grapples with the intricacies of defining oneself as both Filipino and Canadian, existing in a liminal space where the concept of balát (skin) serves as a metaphor for the intertwined layers of identity.
